General practice is a key part of the Irish health service. Over 90-95% of patients are managed in the GP setting and there are in the region 29 million visits to general practice in Ireland annually. There are an additional one million consultations to the out-of-hours GP care co-operatives.

The Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) is the professional body for general practice in Ireland and was founded in 1984. It is the representative organisation on education, training and standards in general practice. The ICGP provides consultancy work in a number of countries in the Middle East which includes providing expertise in education, assessment and training. It also oversees and manages a 4 year training programme in Malaysia (identical to the Irish Programme) with its partners RUMC and IHEED. At an international level, the ICGP is an active member of WONCA Europe and has representatives involved at all levels of its network organisations.
